Hello My Dear Veterinary colleagues,
One of my students sent me this problem about her cat. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
Here it is...
My
cat has a food allergy to an unknown allergen. He has been like this
for over a year now and he scratches his head/face and pulls out his
hair on his lower back, around his butt, and front and back legs. I took
him to the vet where he said it is symptomatic
of a food allergy. Unless I get him tested, which I simply cannot
afford, it is trial and error. He was eating Wellness brand Chicken cat
food, then I switched him to Wellness Core Brand Chicken which is gluten
and grain free and still no improvement. My vet
said it was possibly chicken so I switched to gluten and grain free
Turkey and Duck and still nothing. I started looking into the starch
components of these foods and saw that potato was the main carbohydrate
source so I just got him a Green Pea and Duck formula
Limited Ingredient Diet. I also changed his litter in case he was
allergic to some scent in it but that did not help either. I am at my
wits end with this because I feel like nothing helps and he suffers. I
have been taking him to the vet every 3 weeks for
depro medrol shots to help relieve the itching/hair pulling but I also
do not want him to be on those long term. Do you, have any ideas I can try or maybe you have read something
that is a common root to this problem in felines?
